DONOR STORY

Because of you …

“A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit.” – D. Elton Trueblood

Elton Trueblood, a 19th century theologian and former chaplain to both Harvard and Stanford Universities, spoke about how an individual can plant a seed that will eventually grow into something for future generations to benefit from. At Saint Leo University, generous donors understand Trueblood’s message, and the shade from the trees planted years ago now provide aid to grateful students.

One individual who made a lasting impact at Saint Leo University was Mr. Herbert Collier. By including Saint Leo University in his estate plan, Mr. Collier funded an endowed scholarship that has financially supported students for more than 35 years. In fact, this year alone, the Herbert K. Collier Scholarship is providing essential funds to four worthy students, each of them from different backgrounds, but all sharing an appreciation for their experience here at Saint Leo University.

“Every day I wake up and thank God I have the opportunity to get out of my bed and go to school in such a beautiful place. This scholarship has given me a serious lift that I needed to get through school.” – Liam O’Brian ’19, Haddon Township, NJ

“Your support shows me that someone does not have to know me personally to want to cheer me on. My goals are inspiring to others, and that means a great deal to me.” – Bakari Miller ’18, Nassau, Bahamas

“At Saint Leo, your experience strengthens your soul, you become inspired, and achieve success. I am grateful to find opportunities like the one you provided to students like me who are constantly fighting to receive an education.” – Shelby Coniglio ’18, Kissimmee, FL

“This scholarship opportunity has truly helped me in the best way possible. Your support means so much to my family and me. Sometimes we forget how many good people there are in this world, and Mr. Collier’s generosity has helped remind me of this.” – Genesiz Paredes ’18, Westchester, NY

Gifts made by generous and supportive alumni and friends like you inspire hope in the lives of these students and their families, passing a philanthropic branch from generation to generation.

Because of Mr. Collier’s generosity and commitment to Saint Leo University, he was posthumously welcomed into the James J. Horgan Heritage Society. The Horgan Society is comprised of individuals like Mr. Collier who made a commitment to Saint Leo University through a planned gift, giving them the ability to achieve their philanthropic wishes and plant seeds for the next generation to yield. You too can join the rolls of this distinguished society by letting us know your intention to include Saint Leo University in your estate plans.
